DEEP beneath the waves she has lain lost for 70 years, her carcass
gathering rust long after she braved the bombs of Dunkirk.
But today the remarkable story of HMS Snaefell can finally be told after a
group of divers located her, off the North East coast of Britain's
coast.
The paddle steamer, which saw service as a minesweeper in both the First
and Second World Wars, was bombed and sank in 1941, and all trace was
lost.
That is until Allan Lopez of North Shields, skipper of the Spellbinder II,
came across the forgotten wreck.
He said: “We kept it a secret for a bit. We have been opening up a lot of
new wrecks and have found quite a lot over the last few years.
“HMS Snaefell was one of the last boats away with survivors from Dunkirk.
The wreck was supposed to be somewhere off Whitley Bay.”
“Paddle steamers are very rare ships. When one of the divers reported he
had seen paddles we did not believe him....

Make
Vanuatu your next years choice for a holiday.
Vanuatu may sound really far for some but it's not if you have time
well in advance to plann for a trip there!
Next year the Shore Dive Festival will take place in Espiritu
Santo, Vanuatu from 22.10.2011 - 26.10.2011
Espiritu Santo is the largest of Vanuatu’s islands (4,010 km2) and with
some of the most beautiful white sand beaches, amazing blue holes, caves,
world renowned diving and snorkelling, it is a little known paradise
waiting to be uncovered. While Santo is a Mecca for dive enthusiasts it
also offers breathtaking sightseeing for non-divers. Days can be spent
lazing on vacant white sand beaches, snorkelling and kayaking in the
crystal clear blue water, trekking through untouched rainforest or discovering an ancient and relatively unchanged culture.
During World War II 100,000 allied troops and support staff were stationed
in Santo. Remnants of this time including the SS President Coolidge, a
22,000 Tonne luxury liner turned troopship which sunk just of shore, have
become world renowned dive sites. Divers and snorkelers can explore ship
wrecks and sites like Million Dollar Point where thousands of tonnes of
war surplus were dumped in the ocean by the US, as well as amazing coral
reefs and blue holes joined by underground caverns.

Here’s the BC that
travelers have been waiting for. The fun, travel-friendly
ZUMA will find favor with those divers who are tired of paying excess
baggage fees. This ultra-light, weight-integrated, back inflation BC has
everything you need, yet lacks weight and bulk. Once you lift it, you’ll
feel for yourself that a size ML/LG weighs less than 2 kg (4.4 lbs), with
the airway and weight pockets included!
Extremely lightweight
• Size ML/LG weighs less than 2 kg (4.4 lbs)
• Great packability – flat or rolled
Weight integration features the SureLock™II (patented) mechanical lock and
release mechanism. The weight pockets align themselves. Just insert the
pocket until it “clicks”. A simple, single-pull release is all that is
needed to jettison the weights in an emergency.
Innovative tank support system eliminates the need for a hard pack
• Lower tank band aligns with waist band
• A valve strap pulls the top of the cylinder in towards your center
of gravity. This relieves the shoulders and transfers the load to the hips
Only 4 sizes are all that’s needed to cover from XXS to XXL

Education news |
Divers Alert Network® has announced the 2011 course dates for both its popular DAN® Diver Medical Technician (DMT) program and its new DMT continuing education program. Aspiring and current DMTs are encouraged to register early; the DMT course routinely fills months in advance and almost always has a waiting list. The new DMT continuing education course followed suit in its 2010 debut.
DMTs fulfill a unique role among divers. They serve as the critical first step in the dive medicine chain, caring for injured divers on the scene and acting as tenders in the hyperbaric chamber. DMTs also provide an alternative to the presence of qualified hyperbaric physicians at every dive site, responding to emergency medical situations, managing the situation and communicating effectively with DAN and physicians in remote locations.
The DAN DMT course offers lectures presented by internationally known faculty, hands-on practical skills and the experience gained through more than 40 hours of classroom, lab and experience at local hyperbaric facilities. Lecture topics include: the role and responsibilities of the DMT; review of gas laws; gas toxicities; the ears and sinuses; otoscope use; decompression sickness (DCS); physical exams and invasive and noninvasive procedures. The DAN DMT course is certified by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology as a Module 16 program. Each course is limited to 12 persons.
Register Early; Courses Expected to Fill Fast

North America's only living coral reef has suffered at the hands of humans, with the effects of growing population in the Keys and mainland Florida causing some coral to die and others to be in distress. Now, scientists are trying ways to restore what's been damaged.
Scientists have been growing coral, which is a living animal, in nurseries so it can be transplanted into the ocean. Their plan is to start with Davis Reef in Islamorada, which has been badly degraded by the effects of growth, shipping, and other human-borne effects.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute scientist Bill Sharp says the work done on Davis Reef could help scientists better understand how nursery-raised coral can help damaged natural coral.
Scientists are also hoping the work will help bring back the long-spined sea urchin, which uses coral reefs as their main habitats.
In addition to providing habitats for a host of sea life, living reefs are also a tourism asset, attracting divers from around the world.
If the conditions which damaged a reef are removed, and the dam age is not too severe, coral reefs can regenerate, but the process is very slow.
