Blue Carbon Photography
Contest |
Participants
invited for the UNEP/GRID-Arendal’s Blue Carbon Photography
Contest
Grassroots organizations who work in coastal and marine conservation are invited to take part in UNEP/GRID-Arendal’s Blue Carbon Photography Contest. Selected photographs will be used in a special publication for the UN
Climate change in Durban, South Africa as well as for the Blue Carbon Photo Library, an online image resource.
Life on the coasts - Blue Carbon is the theme of the contest and is focused on the importance of a healthy marine environment and coastal livelihoods.
Two categories of images are needed. Coastal and Marine Ecosystems and People and the Environment. Examples
include coastal and underwater scenes, community based restoration and conservation projects, our connection to healthy
coastal ecosystems (e.g. fisheries, tourism), and how a changing ocean and climate impact the daily life of people and
communities living along the coast.
As long as there is a clear affiliation with a grassroots organization, all professional and non-professional photographers
worldwide are welcome to submit. Organization logos will also be highlighted in the special publication. Blue Climate
Solutions has offered a digital underwater camera as a prize for the best image.
Submission deadline is September 16th 2011.

Abyss
22 Navy from Mares
After thorough research Mares has developed the Abyss 22 Navy. This product has been meticulously studied and
designed to give top performance and reliability under tough conditions which include diving under ice.
The Abyss 22 Navy was recently accepted into the AMU list. This is the list of equipment authorized for US navy use.
Most performant regulators will not withstand freezing tests which were carried out with the Abyss 22 Navy. The
regulator turns into a block of ice. This is inevitable under the conditions of the test. However, in spite of this, the regulator
continues to function flawlessly for the duration of the test.
No matter how extreme your adventure, the Abyss 22 Navy is up to the task.
All you need is just to add water.

Revive Your Dive 2011 a Great Example of Building Safety into Special Events
Be it the upcoming lobster mini-season, a lionfish roundup or a fundraising treasure hunt, it’s easy to get
caught up in the excitement of the moment and then safety becomes an afterthought. But
for every dive, safety must remain a priority to make sure that every participant fully enjoys the day.
DAN provides a number of resources to help divers prepare for and stay safe during the excitement of a special occasion.
•In-person information. DAN often takes part in special events not only to share information on the organization, but to
present information intended to improve diver safety. DAN’s involvement in Revive Your Dive 2011 is an excellent
example of this; divers preparing for next week’s lobster mini-season can take part in the free event and complete a scuba
refresher course, get an equipment inspection or have fitness-to-dive questions answered by staff from the DAN Medical
Information department. Attendees of the Jim Haigh Memorial Dive Weekend fundraising event will see another example
of DAN supporting safety in person, as Dan Orr will present a special lecture on diving fatalities as part of the weekend
program.

Marine
Nature Conseravtion Scotland
Marine Scotland is working hard to ensure a clean, safe, healthy and biologically diverse marine and coastal environment
that meets the peoples and natures long term needs. This englobes managing the sustainability of our seas to protect the
biological diversity and make sure that our marine ecosystems continue providing economic, social and wider benefits for
people, industry and society.
To help achieve this goal, a Nature Conservation Strategy was published stressing
Marine Scotland's vision, aims and objectives for the protection of marine biodiversity.
The strategy sets the vision and framework for marine nature conservation based on a three pillar approach:
Species conservation
Site protection
Wider seas policies and measures
