Australia plans huge marine reserve in Coral Sea
The Australian government has said that it is planning to make the world's largest marine reserve in the Coral Sea. It is said the protected zone will cover an area more than one-and-a-half times the size of France.
They intend to impose new fishing limit and and exploration for oil and gas banned.
The proposal is subject to a 90-day consultation, but the Coral Sea's biodiversity is at the heart of the plan.
There is no other part of Australia's territory where so much comes together - pristine oceans, magnificent coral, a
military history which has helped define us and now a clear proposal for permanent protection.
The sea - off the Queensland coast in north-east Australia - is home to sharks and tuna, isolated tropical reefs and deep
sea canyons. It is also the resting place of three US navy ships sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.

New addition to DAN's online education
Earlier this year, Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) added a new offering to its online education lineup: a new video lecture
series featuring DAN experts discussing a variety of topics of common interest to divers. The newest addition to the video
series is a look at diving fatalities presented by DAN President Dan Orr.
“Diver Fatalities: When Bad Things Happen to Good Divers” takes a look at
recreational diving fatalities using DAN’s analysis of nearly 1,000 diving fatalities cases. The 45-minute presentation also includes a discussion of diving hazard
identification and mitigation with recommendations on how to improve safety.
This is an ideal video for those wishing to highlight the topic in a group setting such as a dive club meeting. Available
at no charge to DAN Members, the video can be viewed an unlimited number of times, so it’s also an excellent teaching tool
for continuing education courses.
“Educating divers on dive safety and continually seeking ways to improve dive safety are core tenets of DAN’s mission, and
the video lectures make available to everyone the popular and useful.

Mariner/Boater conservation tips
As a mariner/boater, you are enjoying the splendor of the blue planet. However, you should be aware of the environmental
consequences of your boating and follow these basic steps to protect the environment for your continued enjoyment.
-Reuse and recycle! Recycle spent antifreeze, fuel, oil, oil filters, and batteries. Use less toxic propylene glycol
antifreeze whenever possible, but check before mixing it with other antifreeze for recycling.
-If you do not currently have recycling at your marina, let the manager know that you
and other boaters would support the separate collection of recyclables.
-Tune up your engine. A tuned engine improves fuel economy and burns fuel more efficiently, causing fewer emissions from
entering the air and water.
-Keeping your hull clean and free of barnacles, grass and other marine growth will help reduce fuel consumption, and help
increase your boats' performance.
-Before entering new waterways, drain all bilge water, live wells, bait buckets and any other water from your boat and
equipment to prevent the introduction of exotic species. -Use a hard (not ablative) anti-fouling paint if you plan on
scrubbing the boat bottom while in the water
-Wash your boat often and naturally. Try to wash your deck off regularly with fresh
water and natural cleaners like vinegar and baking soda to reduce the amount of strong chemical cleaners needed throughout the boating season
